Catapult Sports, elite sport’s number one provider of wearable athlete tracking, today announced the acquisition of Canberra-based GPSports.
The acquisition brings together two pioneers of the wearables revolution, with both companies boasting more than a decade of experience in sports technology. Working with more than 450 elite teams worldwide, the combined group’s global client base will include:
- The entire AFL, NRL and Australian Super Rugby conference
- 2014 NFL, NBA and US college football champions
- 12 squads in the 2014 FIFA World Cup
Catapult CEO Shaun Holthouse is excited about his company’s growth but assures Catapult and GPSports will continue running as separate companies.
“We are excited about adding GPSports to the Catapult group,” Holthouse said.
“Like Catapult, GPSports has differentiated itself from competitors by developing evidence-based systems with leading sports practitioners which improve athlete performance and teams”.
“This acquisition cements our market-leading position and Catapult’s commitment to our existing, new and potential clients for delivering world-leading performance management technology. With the industry maturing rapidly resulting in consolidation, our core focus will now be to develop scale and distribution across the globe”.
In the past six months, Catapult has progressed significantly on several fronts, including:
- The addition of Dallas Mavericks Owner Mark Cuban as an investor and advisor
- The release of the world’s first GNSS elite tracking monitors (OptimEye S5), enabling greater accuracy of complex athlete movement, and an athlete analytics platform (OpenField
- Making the list of top 10 innovations in Esquire magazine behind Google Glass
- The announced integration with Stats LLC data for complete athlete analysis in the NBA.
An enhanced GPSports will continue running out of its Canberra offices, separate from Catapult’s new Melbourne-based Australian headquarters.
“Day one after the acquisition, we expect the only thing GPSports users will notice is an increased focus on customer service as we invest in this side of the operation,” Holthouse said.
“We know a lot of GPSports clients are very loyal to the brand and technology. The last thing we want to do is disrupt a good thing. Over the longer term we will be looking for synergies that bring added value to our combined customer base”.
