Catapult and Prevent Biometrics form partnership to integrate athlete performance and safety data

Catapult has partnered with Prevent Biometrics to support the development of the world’s first accurate, real-time system for monitoring athletic head impacts.

The partnership will see the two companies test their technologies together across North America, Europe and Australia, building on initial trials conducted with the University of Colorado football team during spring practice in April.

“As a program we are highly committed to athlete safety and, in particular, we want to be proactive around head and brain health,” said Miguel Rueda, Associate Athletic Director and Head of Sports Performance at the University of Colorado. “The Prevent system gives our staff continuous, accurate and thorough head impact data for every athlete. Combining the Prevent and Catapult datasets and workflows holds exciting potential.”

Upcoming tests will see a number of elite American Football, Rugby and Australian Rules teams equipped with Catapult’s ClearSky athlete monitoring technology and Prevent’s Impact Monitor Mouthguard. The tests will aim to evaluate athlete performance and head impact in an integrated way, with the ultimate ambition being to understand the physical demands of elite competition, emphasizing wellness and safety while putting athletes in the best position to perform.

“A combined Catapult and Prevent dataset extends beyond the obvious benefits of simply knowing a player has received significant head impact,” said Albert Tsai, Catapult’s Senior Vice President – Global Elite Products. “With this data, teams can leverage the relationship between training, performance and head health to work proactively to reduce exposure to impacts overall.”

The work being done between Catapult and Prevent further highlights the commitment of both business’ to creating technologies that simultaneously support on-field performance and improved levels of athlete welfare. As the trials of the system continue, it will be exciting to see how the partnership can help drive the development of a genuinely innovative performance technology.
