Catapult ready to support World Rugby injury risk reduction initiatives during 2019 Rugby World Cup

World Rugby recently announced a range of new initiatives designed to reduce injury risk in the sport. Based around the pillars of law review, training load, injury surveillance, game preparation and tackle education, the new measures aim to improve understanding of the factors that contribute to injury rates in elite rugby union.

As part of the new plans, all players at the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan will require a ‘load passport’ that tracks their workload across training and games in both club and international rugby. World Rugby has made it a priority to quantify that load using the data captured by athlete monitoring technologies, with that information being used to support a research project that will shape future loading guidance.

At Catapult we work with over 200 elite club and international rugby teams worldwide to help them optimise performance, reduce injury risk, and support return-to-play. Presenting the data collected by our wearable devices in an accessible and engaging way, our OpenField software is able to generate detailed load passports for any sport.

Visualising load measurements from training and games, OpenField’s customisable dashboards make it easy to quickly collate and review the information required to meet World Rugby’s load passport specifications. When integrated with Catapult AMS, teams also have the ability to automatically combine OpenField load data with all areas of the athlete profile, including subjective measures, testing data and medical information.

Improving the efficiency of key workflows, Catapult provides the ideal platform for rugby practitioners preparing to comply with the sport’s new injury risk reduction measures.
