Catapult G5 nominated in Performance Technology of the Year category at BT Sport Industry Awards

The Catapult G5 has been nominated in the Performance Technology of the Year category at the 2018 BT Sport Industry Awards.

A unique, goalkeeper-specific monitoring device, the G5 is able to recognise specific dive actions and provide metrics that give coaches a detailed insight into the loads goalkeepers are exposed to in training and match situations.

Despite athlete tracking technology being widespread throughout elite football, the metrics that are used to gauge the performance of outfield players bear little relation to the performance of goalkeepers. The specialised nature of the position has meant that goalkeeper training has historically be highly specific to position, with physical analysis typically limited to heart rate monitoring.

Recognising the lack of useful performance metrics available to goalkeepers and their coaches, our data science team began working with elite clubs and research partners to develop a set of algorithms that measure goalkeeper-specific actions.

Leveraging the inertial sensors (gyroscope, accelerometer, magnetometer) within Catapult’s technology, the G5 is capable of delivering eight goalkeeper metrics at a 98% accuracy rate and is now used by over 120 elite teams around the world.

The winners of the BT Sport Industry Awards will be announced at Battersea Evolution on Thursday 26th April.
